In the spring of 1994, as the 50th anniversary of D-Day approached, News-Gazette (Champaign, IL) reporters and photographers spread out across East Central Illinois, interviewing nearly 200 people - most of them veterans of World War II - for publication in a special newspaper insert. With the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor upon us, it seemed an appropriate time to retell these memories and share them again, in a more permanent format.
