Russell Babcock was a country boy from Colorado in 1961. High school was over, summer harvest was over, and he didn't know what to do for winter. So, he joined the Army. By the time he left in 1973, after service in Vietnam, he'd been awarded the Bronze Star, Silver Star, and three Purple Hearts. After bouncing around civilian life for a couple decades, he decided to join back up - at age 48. Before he retired at 56, he'd also be awarded the Legion of Merit and other decorations. In the years after, he came to know his adult children in ways he'd missed during his career away from home.
