There are few writers with Louis Bromfield’s gift of storytelling. His is a master band whether it writes of the Cote d’Azur at its height or of the Ohio farmlands near his present home. Now for the first time in five years he has gathered together a volume of his stories— stories that are supremely diverting, penetrating in character, deft in plot and varied in background.
Six of the nine stories in The World We Live In move around the subject of the war—the mystical pathos of the Dakota farm boy who, on a Pacific Island, dreamt of his home, his young wife and the cool quiet pond that lay by the farmhouse; the escape of the sensual, aging Princess D’Orobelli, and her silent Italian maid, from war torn Italy to Monte Carlo and her meeting with austere, weary Mary Pulsifer—both hangers on of the decadent world of “International White Trash” that lived its amoral, futile life in the resorts of pre-war Europe; the legend of Mrs. Lintob who refused to leave the old house, on an isolated island off the English coast, where she was born; the septuagenarian sisters, expatriates in France, who had promised “dear Papa” that they would never again set foot on American soil made unfit for the life of Georgia gentlefolk by the Yankees; Eric and Zosha, two secret agents, who discovered the futility of their dangerous existence in their consuming love for one another; and the appalling picture of the German parvenus who, in the years before this war, bought and bullied Hitler’s way to power with their wealth and covetousness.
Here also is the tragedy of crippled, brilliant Merle Jenkins who devoted his energy to making a famous politician in d Duncan Masters, a man with no brain but possessing all the physical attributes that Merle lacked— a strange twisted tale filled with agony and pathos. In contrast there is the comic, colloquial tale of Daisy and her teeth— Daisy who had toured the Borscht Circuit for years and whose ambition almost ruined her life. Lastly a folk tale of the Ohio country for which Louis Bromfield cares so deeply—the story of Zenobia, the handsome spirited half-Indian girl and her passionate tragic romance with Aaron, her seclusion “up Ferguson Way” in the farm on the hilltop next to the sky.
This is a rich volume that will satisfy every taste. It is evidence of the breadth of Bromfield’s imagination and his scope as a fiction writer.
