The Undersea Adventure

A book owes more to its readers than to its author. The author's work ends on the last page of his book, but only its readers give it life. Nevertheless, a writer can at least express his pleasure when one of his books is translated. I shall not, therefore, hide my satisfaction in knowing that L'adventure Sous-Marine is going to reach and English public. I am pleased for many reasons; most of all, perhaps, because the English have such a close and subtle relationship to the sea. but it is primarily a relationship to the sea's surface, in which the wind plays as much part as the water. We, however, are establishing an intimacy with the deep, finding beyond the rough barrier of the waves a motionless and transparent world, a silent kingdom through which we are gradually feeling our way. I am perhaps a little vain about this, but it is not an exclusive and jealous vanity.
