Written at the height of the civil rights struggle in the United States in 1959 (published with a supplemental introduction by Harper Torchbooks in 1964), author Kyle Haselden notes that when the work first appeared he was an American Baptist Convention minister serving a white congregation in Charleston, West Virginia. He was engaged with others, white and Negro, in what was at that time an unsuccessful local attempt to secure desegregated hotel and restaurant accommodations. It was an instructive experience for which no amount of theoretical speculation was an adequate substitute. Haselden asserts that "bridging of the void from both sides of the racial cleavage must be the ultimate concern of all Christians who, knowing that they 'have been brought near in the blood of Christ,' know also that a tragic history has put asunder what God made one in Jesus Christ." A captivating read for both its historical value as well as its continuing relevance today.
