Less than 100 years ago, the Appaloosa horse, as we know it in this country was near extinction. An ancient breed, it was cherished by the Nez Perce Indians and through selective breeding they developed a superior horse. During the Nez Perce Indian wars, most of the herds were lost, scattered and stolen. The United States Army captured and/or destroyed hundreds of them in an effort to subdue the Indians. However, today more than one half million Appaloosas have been officially registered throught the Appaloosa Horse Club which was founded in 1938.
Based on these historical facts, The Palouse Horse ia a fictional story of a Nez Perce Indian, born around 1885. He is a grandson to a warrior who fought with Chief Joseph in the final battle at Bear Paw Mountain where many of the horses were lost. The main force in his life is to restore his family's herd of prized horses.
