The late Charles Hastings Smith, known widely as the “Poet of the Ozarks,” wrote about themes that had a “country” feel about them. Here is one of the classic poems from his book, Sunshine on the Backroads. They all said he was a failure But he refused to hear their lies. “Failure means I have quit,” he answered, “It means a man no longer tries.” “True, I’ve had a few reversals, And I have lost a game or two, But I’ve never thought about quitting Because I knew I was not through.” So he stood up one spring morning When a strong wind blew in his face, And strapped on his shoes of courage And showed them how to run a race. He ran as though led by angels And he never stopped to look back; He won the race and also set A brand new record for the track. The crowd gave him praise and plaudits; He was the idol of all men. . . . “What’s your secret? Tell us.” He said, “When I resolved to try again.”
