Dan Jaffe is a keenly observant poet. His fine ear enables him to listen and hear well. But his observations are never coldly precise; they are equal parts honesty and clemency in a voice that is freshly his own. The people in Jaffe’s poems live in a real world. They learn what it means for a Jew to grow up among Christians, as they usher children into the world and grandparents out. His eye and ear pick out details and rhythms from our lives while his pen records our celebrations and sorrows. The result is Round for One Voice, a richly varied sequence of related poems. Some are witty; some are deeply lyrical. Others are full-length narratives. But whatever shape a poem takes, Jaffe is very much at ease as the poem builds toward a unity that is more than just a singular voice, but a voice seasoned by maturity and by heritage. Dan jaffe is professor of English at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and founding director of BkMk Press and the Samuel Clemens Writers Conference. A recipient of the Hopwood Award for poetry, his previous collections of poetry include Dan Freeman and Seasons of the River. He lives in Overland Park, Kansas, with his wife, Robin, and the youngest of their six children.
