My three years in Moscow

I lived in Moscow for three years across from the Kremlin. Between the American Embassy and the red brick, crenellated walls of the Kremlin Palace, the center of Soviet power, lies only the wide Mokhovoya Avenue. Even so, I haven't entered those walls twenty times out of duty; I've only been there four times for a lengthy meeting with Stalin. But these four lengthy meetings with Stalin, and the one or two brief encounters during those meetings, were still significant. Because no other Western representative had the privilege of such an opportunity during my time in Russia. Having carefully considered his words and actions in recent years, and having had the opportunity to meet with him several times, it's quite possible to distinguish the real Stalin from the Stalin of fairy tales. It's thanks to this experience that I've reached certain conclusions about Stalin, during the sixty-ninth year of his life and the twenty-fifth year of his rise to power.
