Mighty in spirit: Experiencing the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit in the Charismatic renewal

This book makes no pretense of being a theological statement. The book is an adaptation of some talks the author gave to students in the charismatic renewal at the University of Notre Dame in 1981. Those talks were designed - as is this book - to open up the area of traditional Catholic spirituality to persons who had been baptized in the Spirit. The author’s is neither a systematic nor a comprehensive treatment of the area. In many places in the book, notes the author, he bases his arguments on tradition. The tradition referred to in such cases is St. Thomas’ synthesis of spirituality. There are certainly other traditional approaches to spirituality, but the author chose to draw from St. Thomas’ system because, in the area of Catholic spirituality, Thomism was predominant before the Second Vatican Council (which preceded the charismatic renewal), and so is the most helpful system to work with in the enrichment-integration process. Each chapter begins with an excerpt from a personal testimony which illustrates the manifestations of the particular gift about to be considered.
