An African proverb says, “One person cannot embrace the Baobab.” This, of course, is a call to community. It takes many, locked hand-in-hand, to completely embrace such an enormous tree. It cannot be done alone. The same is true of Christianity. To embrace Christ, is to embrace that which is far greater than ourselves. To seek to know God, to pursue God, is to endeavor to attempt that which is only partially possible. His Person is too mysterious, His plans too grand that they should ever entirely and comfortably fit our individual embrace. Embracing the Baobab is about embracing God. In this book, I share some of the ways that Africa––which if Africa is anything, it is a continent of community––has transformed my own journey of faith as I continue to discover what it means to follow Christ. My wife and I left together to go to Zambia as missionaries in 2007. Many times since, I have felt that Zambians, whom we are privileged to work and serve with, have given us far more than we have given them. This is a book about how Africa has helped me to embrace God in ways I never had before. I pray that this book, in some small way, does the same for you. Author Jerry Ireland and his wife Paula are Assemblies of God missionaries to Zambia, where they have served since 2007. Jerry has a B.A. in Bible and Theology from Central Bible College, an M.A. in Missiology/Intercultural Studies from Global University, and is currently working on a Ph.D. in Theology and Apologetics at Liberty University, in Virginia.
