Moonbeam Book Award Winner — Selah Award Winner If the sea spit you out, thrusting you back into the age of pirates, buried treasure, and beauty beyond belief... would you stay? Ricky is about to find out that some dead men do tell tales — and of a terrifying sort. Ricky Bradshaw has never sailed the Spanish Main, searched for buried treasure, or battled pirates on the deck of a Spanish Galleon. He's never fallen through the floor of Davy Jones' Locker, skippered a pirate vessel, or saved the life of a governor's daughter. To be fair, neither have most people. But most people aren't in this pirate tale. Ricky is — and probably wishes he wasn't. One moment, he's attempting to rescue Barnacle — a mangy mutt of questionable hygiene and documented shrimp breath. The next, he's on a raft in the middle of the Caribbean Sea, where there is surprising beauty on every island, mortal danger around every corner, and the crew of the Curse of the Black Avenger waiting to ruin his whole early-to-mid-to-late-in-life romance. The "Black Avenger," you may recall, was the swashbuckling pirate persona famously adopted by one Tom Sawyer, who — thanks to Mark Twain — inspired generations of boys to romanticize a life of plunder and glory. Tom, of course, got to go home for supper. And Becky Thatcher (sometimes). Ricky got grub with a side of maggots and a severe case of homesickness. Curse of the Black Avenger delivers buried treasure, high-seas adventure, and enough genuine peril to make you forget you're technically reading a book. Some dead men, it turns out, have a great deal to say — and none of it is particularly reassuring. But don't worry, parents! The Caribbean Chronicles Series remains a safe harbor for young readers. There is zero sexual content, violence just graphic enough to remind you that plastic swords CAN poke an eye out, and language so wholesome it would make Anita Bryant want to break out in a Jimmy Buffett song. The most dangerous words in this book are "ARRR" and "Davy Jones," neither of which has ever gotten a boy grounded. Probably. We hope you enjoy these pirate books for young adults, teens, and older kids — and we cannot be held responsible if your child suddenly demands a parrot.
