Barrett Smith has been performing with Shannon Whitworth as part of her backing band for quite a while. On Bring It on Home, the pair is equal as a duo. Shannon Whitworth and Barrett Smith curate a dozen songs that are familiar in the original form. With Bring It on Home, Shannon and Barrett acoustically honor both song origins and embed slight changes to enhance and brand the tunes as part of the pairing of the two musicians. Shannon and Barrett take Sam Cooke’s 1962 hit “Bring It on Home to Me” as the album title and re-work the tune with the same groove as the original but add lots of individuality in simple sound flourishes and fine-tuned harmony. Using a simple acoustic guitar opening like James Taylor’s original version of “You Can Close Your Eyes”, the pair add cello and reverbed guitar leads to Shannon’s lonesome, leaving home vocals. Barrett Smith has a nearly breaking vocal turn on Leonard Cohen’s “Bird on a Wire”, slowing the song down so that every confession and promise is a last chance to make things right. Shannon Whitworth and Barrett Smith match an excellent choice of covers with an ability to deliver unique translations. They give Paul Simon’s “Duncan” a coffee house hush, “Sway” is a mamba rhythm on simmer and “You Are My Sunshine” is a stalker whose abandonment issues threaten a possible homicidal outcome. -- The Alternate Root
