Caught up in turbulent times when Egypt was invaded by the "People of the Sea" (the Hyksos), Merytaton is captured by the people she called her countrymen. Nikolas, a Hyksos officer who intercepts the fleeing Merytaton and her family, hears her speaking his language and spares their lives. This chance meeting results in her home becoming filled with the wounded, and a table becomes the place to set broken limbs, and treat wounds and illnesses. Merytaton wins the respect of her Hyksos captors, but especially the admiration of Nikolas. Hostility between her husband, who openly defies Nikolas, creates an atmosphere of tension and finally abuse in Merytaton's marriage. While rearing Nikolas' daughter as her own, with her two other children, the love Merytaton and Nikolas denied each other earlier culminates in attaining a happiness for both of them, in an Egypt crying for deliverance from captivity.
