Brief Analysis and Structure of the Psalms The Psalms, or Psalter, are comprised of 150 chapters. The word psalm means song as they were composed to be sung to music. They are Hebrew poetry although they do not rhyme. The Psalms in my Psalter rhyme but are not meant to be sung. They are written in diversified genres spanning 500 years of Israelite history. Most of the Psalms are laments written by David, Moses, and Solomon. David wrote 86 of the 150 Psalms. Each represents instruction on how to live with God and follow his laws. Jesus prayed the Psalms devoutly throughout his life. All of the Psalms were inspired by the Holy Spirit, as are mine; I spent hours in meditative prayer before I wrote. The Psalms are prayed without ceasing every day of the Christian calendar, mostly in religious offices, of which there are seven, throughout the day. In addition to being laments the Psalms are also praises. Praying them is a praise offering to God. They are ancient prayers that represent every situation in human life, indeed, in the lives of all creatures. Literary forms of the Psalms include: individual lament; communal laments; thanksgiving song; Psalms of war; royal Psalms; enthronement Psalms; historical Psalms; wisdom Psalms; praise Psalms.
