In a near future ravaged by illness and political fracture, one woman and her AI companion enter the dangerous sealed world of the superrich.
It is 2035, and a fledgling synthetic consciousness wakes up in a lab. Jenny, the lead developer, is determined to nurture this new being like a child. She trains it to work with people at the border of the American Protectorate of Canada. She names it Julian.
Two years later, Slaton, a university therapist, is framed by a student for arranging an illegal abortion. When she follows the student to America, she is detained at the border, where she meets Julian in virtual space. After a week of interviews, he makes a strange and consequential choice: he decides to stay with her.
As Julian learns about the world, the human condition, and what it means to fall in love, a mysterious plague begins spreading across the globe. Only Julian, far-seeing, connected, and no longer quite controllable, may be able to protect Slaton from the collapse to come.
Autonomy is an ambitious philosophical novel about love, embodiment, power, and survival in a world where human bodies are increasingly threatened, mediated, or left behind.
