The early morning hours of January 1, 1882, were very cold and dark as eleven-year-old Charles Carter moved into position behind a large pine tree. The deer will soon show up, thought Charles as he settled into position with his rifle at the ready. His father, Robert, had brought him to this place many times over the last four years to teach Charles how to fire his rifle and to shoot deer and rabbits to add to the family larder. Now Charles came by himself for the first time. He felt the closeness of his father, and a tear trickled down his cheek as he thought about his father s funeral just a few weeks ago. A Promise Kept is a historical fiction about Charles Carter. He was born on a farm in rural Lawrence County, Alabama, just five years after the close of the Civil War. He had two sisters and a pregnant mother when his father died in late 1881. He became the man of the house and matured very rapidly. He shouldered the responsibility of head of the house from the early days following the death of his father. His mother was concerned about how she would take care of his sisters and the coming baby until they reached maturity. Charles made a promise to care for her, his two sisters, and the coming baby until they married or died. His mother understood it to be a sacred vow, and it gave her great peace. She gave him another sister in April 1882. When Charles's mother died in March 1886, a series of events started which led to a major upheaval in the lives of Charles Carter and his sisters. The book describes events which developed the Christian faith, personality, maturity, leadership, skills, and temperament of Charles which gave him the ability to keep the sacred vow he had made to his mother, and see his sisters live with him until they were all married.
