"The purpose of this special compilation is to make dictionary usage as easy as possible. It is intended primarily for piano and organ students through high school. This is accomplished in three major ways. (1.) Hundreds of rarely used terms, unlikely to be encountered by the high school musician, have been eliminated. The remaining terms can be found faster and with less effort. (2.) Pronunciations are provided by means of phonetic syllables with the accented syllable capitalized. This serves to make it easy to determine the correct pronunciation without teacher assistance. (3.) All words printed in italics appear in their normal alphabetical sequence as a separate entry in this dictionary. This helps in understanding definitions which may contain unfamiliar terms. The choice of foreign language terms is also tailored to the needs of the high school keyboard student, considering the span of musical literature that is commonly available. Foreign words that have become a common part of the musical vocabulary in the United States are given their current American pronunciation (although it is recognized that this may be a corruption of the true Italian...."
