Butterfly Sleep

Kim Kyung Ju’s Butterfly Sleep is a surrealist narrative based in the early period of the Joseon dynasty. Composed of absurdism, magical realism, and satire, Ju implements an existentialist allegory to illustrate the rapid development of Korea. Butterfly Sheep is a story about the fractured soul of the nation. Moreover, Ju’s novel becomes a lesson in consolation. Ju’s use of poetic language gives life to music, a console to the characters and the readers of the play. With lyricism and grace, Ju suggests the path of consoling the ghosts of the nation is through direct confrontation; Confront the ghosts, and then sing them a lullaby. Drifting in and out of song, we experience the Joseon dynasty for all its violence and glory in Ju’s brutal historical drama.
